As a result, I don't believe we ever saw a single true alt Heroic Lich King progression raid. Similarly, I don't think we're going to see alt raids on Ra-den. The number 30 is also large enough that while one accidental pull or disconnect is of course still going to sting, it isn't crippling.
I'd also really like to emphasize that Ra-den is a true bonus boss. Lei Shen is the final boss of Throne of Thunder, just as Yogg-Saron was the final boss of Ulduar. Lei Shen offers an epic challenge, and should feel like the pinnacle of the zone as a whole. Ra-den is your reward if you manage to beat the zone on its hardest difficulty -- he's a bonus level. Algalon literally had three mechanics to deal with for the entire fight, and in practice most guilds killed him in around 3 hours or a couple dozen attempts. It's just that they were tuned tightly numbers-wise, and the one-hour weekly limit turned what would have otherwise been a single night of progression into three or four weeks. Heroic Lei Shen is a harder and more complex fight than Ra-den, and I'm not going to claim otherwise. Ra-den is just different; he's a bit of a mystery, and something we haven't tried in a while.
Regarding alts: To engage Heroic Lei Shen, you must have killed 11/12 bosses on Heroic in that lockout. To engage Ra-den, you must have killed Heroic Lei Shen in that lockout. I'm incredibly skeptical that anyone is going to manage that with multiple alt clears in parallel, both due to gear disparity and because doing so would mean forfeiting much of the ability to optimize raid composition for progression on the hardest fights.
Finally, we'll see what we can do to minimize the quality-of-life issues here. I can't promise this will be doable until we've implemented it, but we'll try to make sure that very short attempts don't count (accidental bodypulls and such), and that we make an exception to the usual rules and reset shaman Reincarnation at the start of each Ra-den pull.

thing I want is to be told that if I'd like to remain a competitive

already has enough pressure as it is.
And as Theck mentioned, maybe that's part of the reason this expansion feels so unfriendly to those that enjoy playing alts. We as players only have so many hours in the day to play -- and right now, that valor upgrade system is dictating exactly how we can spend those hours. Mists of Pandaria has given us endless options for endgame, but the valor upgrade system has limited the amount of those things we can do, if our interests are in raiding.
Yet I think what we're looking at here isn't necessarily a system put in place to make our gear better. To be perfectly honest, I think that the valor upgrade system was implemented to make the raiding a little easier, as an alternative to the scaling raid nerf/buff that we saw at the end of Wrath, and again at the end of Cataclysm. Instead of introducing a raid-wide nerf or a raid-wide buff, we were instead given the opportunity to earn more valor, make our gear better, and make that content just a little easier on ourselves, by merit of upgrading our gear.

It's obviously a scaled system, and it's dependent upon the
individual player, rather than Blizzard simply slapping a buff or a nerf
on the content. In that aspect, it's a neat system. But I don't think
we necessarily need it, especially when it's creating this overwhelming
feeling of necessity in players, that urge to cap that valor every week
and improve every last bit of gear we possibly can.

Rather like Alysrazor in Firelands, Ji-Kun has a mechanic involving feathers. These platforms are the key to this fight, which, apart from their mechanic, is, frankly, rather dull. Some of your party will be traveling to and from the lower platforms, while most will likely remain on the upper.
Platform Hopping
The platforms can be seen in the image above, and what their mechanic revolves around is, essentially, Ji-Kun's babies. She's a Mogu experiment gone wrong, you see, and as part of the process of sorting the whole Mogu mess out, you have to kill her nascent chicks.
The fight begins with all players on Ji-Kun's platform, where she will land in the middle, ready to be collected by one of the two tanks. There are two tank-swap mechanics, Infected Talons and Talon Rake. The latter hits for 175% weapon damage as physical damage and leaves a one-minute debuff on the tank that increases the damage they take from the next Talon Rake by 50%. It seemed that these two combined to mean that a tank-swap at two stacks of Talon Rake was the best way to go, perhaps even just one stack depending on your composition.
Because it's not like the tanks have much else to do. Your best AoE DPS will be platform hopping to take down Ji-Kun's chicks before they manage to eat the slime she's throwing at them, and mutate into bigger, angrier chicks. Periodically, a beam of light will appear on one of the five platforms, as you can see we've marked them with raid markers to make it easier to identify the appropriate platform, as on PTR the beam of light appeared and disappeared fairly quickly.
You can see the beam of light to the right-hand side of the above picture, just next to the blue world marker. This signals players that some DPS and probably a healer depending on your DPS need to jump down there and start killing some Hatchlings. Hatchlings are the lowest grade of bird, so they cast the lowest rank of Cheep. If the Hatchlings are not killed before they finish their cast of Feed, they will transform into Fledglings. These attack random players, and also spawn eggs which will lead to the appearance of Juveniles. If you look back to the header image, that's what's flying overhead the main platform -- these do a lot of damage with their version of Cheep, so the fewer of them you have the better.
The Hatchling Cheep damage is not inconsequential, though, so you'll either need to send DPS with good AoE and good off-healing, or send two DPS and a healer. Depending on which platform the Hatchlings spawn on, it is possible for a healer standing on the edge of the main platform to heal the DPS below, but this is a risky strategy.
Once the Hatchlings are dead, they will drop feathers. These, like Alysrazor's feathers, should be collected by those on the platform, and used to fly back to the main platform. Our team found that it was very important to be careful about the number of feathers collected, as it was relatively easy to pick too many up and strand someone on the platform, but the possibility to jump off and have a slow, spinning lift back to the main platform did mitigate this risk, somewhat.
The debuff meaning that the feathers couldn't be re-used to fly for one minute didn't mean that there had to be an interchanging set of DPS hitting the adds, but this may change come live. However, at the time of testing, there was another issue that prevented DPS from traveling down to take out every wave of Hatchlings.
The Main Platform
This, as the name suggests, is where the bulk of the encounter takes place, and the tanks, healers (we had three in total) and the ranged DPS will spend the vast majority of their time. There are several abilities to contend with, so let's rattle through them in order of annoyance.
Feed Pools: These green puddles appear on the main platform, and will eventually cover it. They can be removed by standing in them for three seconds, but doing so both damages the player standing in them and puts up a debuff called Slimed. When this debuff falls off, the next application of Slimed will do 10% more damage, and this effect stacks. Feed Pols build up quite quickly, as can be seen from the image below, so it is necessary to clear space by taking the debuff now and then.
Downdraft: Ji-Kun will flap her wings, causing a downdraft that will try to blow players off the platform. Players will need to run against the Downdraft to avoid a brief trip to floorsville -- it was unclear whether the slow lift mechanic found on PTR would still be around on live servers or not. If not, this is a raid wiper. We found that jumping allowed you to actually travel forwards over the Downdraft.
Caw: This ability is cast periodically by Ji-Kun, and sends out bolts of sound towards random targets. These bolts of sound will explode on impact with the target, inflicting 250k physical damage to all players standing within eight yards of the impact. This cannot be kited, they move too quickly, so the best thing seems to be for the players not being targeted to move away, thereby avoiding the damage. Players hit should also move out of the resultant sound wave, as seen below.
Quills: This is the last and by far the most annoying ability Ji-Kun has to offer. Timers will make it far, far easier to manage, but we found that approximately every 50 seconds to one minute, Ji-Kun will cast Quills, inflicting a little under 100,000 damage to all players every second for ten seconds. This damage is physical, so our paladins' devotion auras did nothing to mitigate it. This ability is annoying, because it also hits players who are down on the lower platforms killing hatchlings. It's very hard for a healer on the lower platform to heal through it alone, and that also potentially wastes a healing cooldown that could be better used on the entire raid.
What we did, then, was to have the platformers head down for the first wave of Hatchlings, but allow the second ones to feed and transform. They'd then go down for the third wave, and so on. What this meant was that they were on the main platform to benefit from healing cooldowns for Quills, and that healing cooldowns were used more efficiently.
Apart from that, ranged DPS need to switch off the boss now and then to take down Juveniles, who are flying around casting their amped up Cheep on random players, doing quite some damage. Having too many Juveniles leads to unhealable random damage. The fight is pretty well rinse and repeat, though, kill hatchlings, back for Quills, and so on, while the main platform deals with their stuff. Periodically, a beam of light will appear on one of the five platforms, as you can see we've marked them with raid markers to make it easier to identify the appropriate platform, as on PTR the beam of light appeared and disappeared fairly quickly.
You can see the beam of light to the right-hand side of the above picture, just next to the blue world marker. This signals players that some DPS and probably a healer depending on your DPS need to jump down there and start killing some Hatchlings. Hatchlings are the lowest grade of bird, so they cast the lowest rank of Cheep. If the Hatchlings are not killed before they finish their cast of Feed, they will transform into Fledglings. These attack random players, and also spawn eggs which will lead to the appearance of Juveniles. If you look back to the header image, that's what's flying overhead the main platform -- these do a lot of damage with their version of Cheep, so the fewer of them you have the better.
The Hatchling Cheep damage is not inconsequential, though, so you'll either need to send DPS with good AoE and good off-healing, or send two DPS and a healer. Depending on which platform the Hatchlings spawn on, it is possible for a healer standing on the edge of the main platform to heal the DPS below, but this is a risky strategy.
Once the Hatchlings are dead, they will drop feathers. These, like Alysrazor's feathers, should be collected by those on the platform, and used to fly back to the main platform. Our team found that it was very important to be careful about the number of feathers collected, as it was relatively easy to pick too many up and strand someone on the platform, but the possibility to jump off and have a slow, spinning lift back to the main platform did mitigate this risk, somewhat.
The debuff meaning that the feathers couldn't be re-used to fly for one minute didn't mean that there had to be an interchanging set of DPS hitting the adds, but this may change come live. However, at the time of testing, there was another issue that prevented DPS from traveling down to take out every wave of Hatchlings.
The Main Platform
This, as the name suggests, is where the bulk of the encounter takes place, and the tanks, healers (we had three in total) and the ranged DPS will spend the vast majority of their time. There are several abilities to contend with, so let's rattle through them in order of annoyance.
Feed Pools: These green puddles appear on the main platform, and will eventually cover it. They can be removed by standing in them for three seconds, but doing so both damages the player standing in them and puts up a debuff called Slimed. When this debuff falls off, the next application of Slimed will do 10% more damage, and this effect stacks. Feed Pols build up quite quickly, as can be seen from the image below, so it is necessary to clear space by taking the debuff now and then.
Downdraft: Ji-Kun will flap her wings, causing a downdraft that will try to blow players off the platform. Players will need to run against the Downdraft to avoid a brief trip to floorsville -- it was unclear whether the slow lift mechanic found on PTR would still be around on live servers or not. If not, this is a raid wiper. We found that jumping allowed you to actually travel forwards over the Downdraft.
Caw: This ability is cast periodically by Ji-Kun, and sends out bolts of sound towards random targets. These bolts of sound will explode on impact with the target, inflicting 250k physical damage to all players standing within eight yards of the impact. This cannot be kited, they move too quickly, so the best thing seems to be for the players not being targeted to move away, thereby avoiding the damage. Players hit should also move out of the resultant sound wave, as seen below.
Quills: This is the last and by far the most annoying ability Ji-Kun has to offer. Timers will make it far, far easier to manage, but we found that approximately every 50 seconds to one minute, Ji-Kun will cast Quills, inflicting a little under 100,000 damage to all players every second for ten seconds. This damage is physical, so our paladins' devotion auras did nothing to mitigate it. This ability is annoying, because it also hits players who are down on the lower platforms killing hatchlings. It's very hard for a healer on the lower platform to heal through it alone, and that also potentially wastes a healing cooldown that could be better used on the entire raid.
What we did, then, was to have the platformers head down for the first wave of Hatchlings, but allow the second ones to feed and transform. They'd then go down for the third wave, and so on. What this meant was that they were on the main platform to benefit from healing cooldowns for Quills, and that healing cooldowns were used more efficiently.
Apart from that, ranged DPS need to switch off the boss now and then to take down Juveniles, who are flying around casting their amped up Cheep on random players, doing quite some damage. Having too many Juveniles leads to unhealable random damage. The fight is pretty well rinse and repeat, though, kill hatchlings, back for Quills, and so on, while the main platform deals with their stuff. Notably, it was possible to totally ignore the mechanics and focus the boss down. However, this will likely be fixed, somehow, before the encounter goes live.

Should Moonglade return to being the druid's Peak of Serenity?
Once upon a time, leveling up a druid was much more difficult than it is now, and arguably more fun. Each form had a class quest to go with it and the Moonglade teleport spell was used to get these quests, as druids needed to speak to the druid trainers in the Cenarion Circle in order to advance as a shape-changer. Granted, the Aquatic Form quest was a royal pain, but it was a rite of passage that I thought made sense. There were no daily quests, nor was there repeated training as to how to use the forms, but the class quests did make advancing as a druid more rewarding.
I think they should revamp Moonglade to return it to its former glory and use the Peak of Serenity as a model for training druids how to use their forms and other key skills.
In a not-so-recent Queue, the_DECK asked about the status of Moonglade, and Anne replied that a revamp wouldn't make sense lore-wise.
The likelihood is kind of slim. See, Moonglade is the home of the Cenarion Circle -- a druid organization that was originally formed by night elves thousands of years ago. It wasn't until recently that they allowed taurens to join the organization, and even though they were allowed, the tauren aren't exactly widely-accepted by everyone in the group. Troll and worgen druids are so very recent that they simply haven't had time to integrate nicely with the rest of the druids.
Not to mention the fact that worgen druids exist solely because of a night elf screw-up that caused the forming of the Cenarion Circle in the first place, and trolls and night elves are not best friends, and likely never will be. I wouldn't cross my fingers on a cross-racial Moonglade full of kitties holding hands -- er, paws -- anytime soon.
I see her point, but since there are troll and worgen druids and they are running around representing druids in general, I can see the Cenarion Circle wanting to assert some control over these upstarts and to make sure they are behaving appropriately. After all, the Peak of Serenity allows Forsaken monks to join them and be trained, and almost no race, particularly all the Alliance ones, want to be around the undead. No one has forgotten or forgiven Wrathgate, after all.
Do I think that only druids and monks should get the Peak of Serenity treatment? Absolutely not. But it's logical for the druids to be next in line since they already have Moonglade and the teleport to it. Other classes may not even need their own space. Our trainers are only good for respeccing right now. Put them to use giving us class quests to get pretty hats or nifty boots every so often.

Tillers, a new quest will unlock in the center of Halfhill. Nana Mudclaw
has decided it's time to retire, but she needs to find a person to fill
her spot on the Tiller's Council. It turns out she's had her eye on
Yoon as her replacement, and it's up to the player to convince Yoon that
this would be a great idea in a quest that rewards a little over nine
gold.
So not only do you not have to purchase the farm, you actually get gold for taking it over. This is actually the nicest solution all around, because it always seemed pretty odd to me that you'd be purchasing Yoon's inheritance from him -- and it didn't seem like something someone would do to an NPC they'd spent all this time being friends with. Plus, the thought of poor Yoon trudging back to wherever he came from with gold in his pockets after spending all that time making the farm work just didn't make sense.
But a reward to a friend that helped him take the farm from nothing to what it looks like when you reach exalted? That's actually a really nice gesture, and a really good reward for those that have made the trek to exalted with the Tillers. So players needn't worry about what's next for Yoon -- he's quite happily serving on the Tillers council and making his ancestors quite proud.
Once you have obtained the farm, Yoon will be replaced with the post that contains work orders as an additional way to get reputation. At the moment, it doesn't seem like the farm is designated as a rested area, and there's no way to set your hearthstone to the location. But the mechanic to obtain the farm is an ideal solution all around.

In addition to owning the farm, a new NPC has been added to the Halfhill Market. Little Milly Greenfield sells bags of all of the seeds you can plant on your farm. However, she's not selling the seed bags for gold -- she's selling them for 30 seeds each. This seems a little awkward, because it requires purchasing 30 seeds from the seed vendor, and then turning those seeds over to the little girl standing right next to the seed vendor.
But the seed bags themselves are a really nice item. Using them at your farm will give you a targeting circle that will overlap four mounds of dirt and plant all four at the same time. This makes planting a much faster process all around, although you still have to deal with the pests that pop up after planting.
While this seems like it should speed up the time it takes to plant crops on your farm, at the moment it isn't really speeding up the process at all. This is largely because of the two-step process to obtaining seeds from Milly. In addition, the fact that it takes 30 seeds just to plant four plots on your farm seems ridiculously lopsided. Why would you go through a two-step process and pay 30 seeds to plant four crops, instead of just grabbing four seeds and planting them individually?

Leveling a New Warrior, Part 1, The Care and Feeding of Warriors
Warriors are a melee DPS/tanking hybrid class that use a variety of
combat stances tailored towards their specific role in combat as well
as the situation to hand. They're uniquely mobile due to several
abilities and talents designed for quick movement on the battlefield,
and can use every single kind of melee weapon, although weapons with
strength should definitely be the priority over ones with agility, and
no warrior should use a weapon with intellect, spellpower or spirit on
it.
Things we're not going to assume you have include Refer-A-Friend bonuses, heirlooms, or lots of gold to burn on the auction house. You don't strictly speaking need any of that to level your starting warrior. With the redesign to leveling in Cataclysm, you'll find it fairly easy to level from 1 to 58 just doing the quests in the various zones, running dungeons, or even through running battlegrounds if that's how you prefer. The great thing about leveling a warrior is, you can tank to run dungeons quickly (it's fairly easy to queue as a tank and chain them) or you can use one of our two DPS specs. Warriors can tank with weapon and shield, dual-wield, or use a big two handed weapon and they are the only class in World of Warcraft that can actually dual wield two big two handed weapons if so desired.
The first thing you're going to want to do is pick between Horde and Alliance of course, and then pick a race. Here are the racial abilities and how they interact with warriors, just to give you some options to consider. Next up, put some thought into what you intend to do with your warrior - do you care about getting to max level as fast as possible, will you be twinking in PvP, are you interested in playing around and seeing if you like the class?
Some basics of warrior play to consider:
Warriors use rage as a resource. Rage is generated by specific attacks (Mortal Strike for arms warriors, Bloodthirst for fury warriors, and Shield Slam/Revenge for protection warriors), by autoattacking in Battle and Berserker Stance, and by Charge and Battle/Commanding Shout for all warriors in all stances. Rage is spent on attacks and survival abilities depending on your role and spec.
Warriors have three combat stances, Battle Stance, Defensive Stance, and Berserker Stance. These are abilities that are toggled on and left on, without any need for you to maintain them, until you choose to change to another stance. Battle Stance generates the most rage when you deal damage, Berserker Stance allows you to generate rage from damage dealt and damage to your character, and Defensive Stance increases threat, which is the game's method of determining which character in an encounter is attacked by the enemies being fought. You should use the proper stance depending on your role and spec - if you're in a dungeon as a damage dealer, don't use Defensive Stance.
The primary warrior stats are strength and stamina, with secondary stats like hit, expertise, crit and mastery becoming more important as you reach maximum level. Tanks also look at dodge and parry, and don't care much about crit.
Warriors begin the game able to wear up to mail armor. At level 40, warriors gain plate specialization and the ability to wear plate armor.
There was a time where, in order to level outside of dungeons, warriors had to pick one of the two DPS specs, but that's no longer the case. You can level in any spec, even if you don't intend to tank. Protection has a lot of survivability as you level in the spec, while arms and fury use damage output to kill things faster to minimize how much damage they take. Protection is the weapon and shield spec, arms is the big two handed weapon spec, and fury uses either two fast one handers or two big slow two handers, depending on your preference.
I mentioned before that you could level between questing (exploring the world to find places with quests and then doing as many of them as you can), running dungeons (you can go as either tank or DPS, but not healer) or PvP. Honestly, my advice is to mix it up until you find what you enjoy the most. The last time I leveled from 1 to 90 on a warrior (my third warrior to hit 90) I decided to mostly quest, and run dungeons once or twice to get the experience from any quests available in those dungeons as well as the experience granted for completing them. You might prefer another approach - perhaps you find quests boring, hate dungeons, and love running BG's. The easiest way to discover is to try them out. In my experience PvP is a little slower than the other two, but you can always run some battlegrounds in-between dungeons or questing.
Warriors are (in my opinion) pretty solid and fun to level. The Mists of Pandaria revamp to class talents and abilities meant that you get a solid spread of abilities while you level. Each class specialization has different abilities, gained as you level up. We've covered fury, arms and protection in Mists of Pandaria before, the basics still hold true. To be honest, I personally think it's never been easier to level a warrior. Just pick what sounds like fun and go.

In the PVE, the fire mage and the arcane mage are better choices in the dungeons. As the frost mage can slow the opponents’ speed and frost the opponents in the original place. So, in tournament and PVP combat, they have overwhelming advantages.
Today, I would like to share some experience with you as a Frost Mage in the game. I hope that this can give you some help. We will talk about the fight with the Warrior mainly today. To tell the truth, that since the Frost Bomb was weakened, the frost Mage has been weakened a lot.
Frost Mage VS Warrior
1. Since the Frost Bomb is weakened, the CD control ability of the Mage is developed a lot. The Blink, Ice Circle, the Deep Freeze, the Frost Circle and other skills are demanding better skill control and the linking up abilities.
2. When you are facing the Warrior, you should calculate the cd of the Spell Reflection, the Double Time and the Leap. You can use some small software to help you. In this battle, you should put the outbreak power in the first place. You should use your skills actively to activate the Warrior use his skills. To make an example, when you are using the Deep Freeze, you can force out the Warrior Badge. You should know that the Warrior may use the Warrior Badge with the Spell Reflection, then you should learn how to deal with them, when to escape and when to defense. It is really helpful to learn to use the ESC and move to interrupt the current spell.
3. When you are in a situation that you can not cast spell normally, you should bravely use the Polymorph to control the melee output of the Warrior. Try to adjust your time and skill to use it. Never forget it that it is very important to keep certain distance with the opponent as a ranged combat profession.
4. Once the Warrior has used his badge and the Spell Reflection, it is your best time to take him down. Use the Icy Veins and ornament, the deep freeze, and ice circle to outbreak, then you can take the Warrior easily down.
5. When you try to conter control, it is very important to know the time. Even through you are not the Necromancer, you have to turn over your badge once you are Scared. You can not use the Spell Reflection when you are under counter control. So, Silence is kind of a outbreak time.
In the PVP combat, only the failure can teach you how to progress. After you are taken down by the enemies once and again, will you reconsider your strategies in the game. This got me thinking about what gear means, simply because my attitude to it was so different to that of the person Draztal is quoting. I love things that generate different opinions within WoW, and it seemed fairly likely that this was one of those things.
The person who originally wrote this is quite feasibly someone who sets great store in the importance of raiding, probably at a high level, such as heroic raiding, and sees gear as a trophy which he or she has won from their exploits. It's a token of remembrance, almost, something to show the world that you have achieved great things. There are plenty of elements of WoW that cater to this view, such as achievements that award titles for long-gone feats of strength, or mounts, anything that says "I was there. I did this."
This gear as a trophy idea is far from exclusive to PvE. It has long been the case in PvP, where the top level of gear, which is only available to players above 2200 rating at present, although that changes in patch 5.2, has been mostly a cosmetic enhancement. The weapons are upgraded, but at present, nothing else is. Again, this will all change in 5.2, when that elite level of gear gets upgraded stats on key pieces, and becomes available to all players, no longer restricted by rating.
The uproar this has caused among certain sections of the playerbase indicates that, despite most of the gear having no additional stats, importance was placed on its exclusivity. Like the player quoted in the aforementioned post, the PvPers who bemoan the removal of the rating requirement might have wanted to show off their shinies like trophies -- apart from the weapons they serve no additional purpose. The same is true for the challenge mode transmog gear, it has no stats, offers no upgrade, it just looks different. Its only purpose is to show off an achievement.
And every time an old piece of gear re-appears for transmogrification, there's usually at least a few players objecting, if it came from an old achievement in an old raid, or similar. There has been a very tiny din about the upcoming availability of vanilla-achievement PvP gear in exchange for rated battleground titles.
A disappearing idea?
Is this idea of wearing gear that somehow indicates prowess or power something that is slowly disappearing from WoW? Certainly, there is still gear that is exclusively available to certain skilled groups, such as the Challenge Mode rewards, but I don't recall the last time I saw a heroic raider wearing the current tier's gear. Or perhaps they all wear it, but I don't notice. Either way, for me it's lost its impact. There are probably exceptions to this, certain stand-out pieces, but with the similarity in models between all the tiers of raiding, it's always hard to tell who's wearing what.
Transmogrification has certainly done its part in subduing this idea, not only because players will often transmogrify the current tier's gear into older sets, but because it has been the thing galvanizing the reappearance of many long-lost items, sets and pieces. Gone are the days when you had to get gear when it was current, there's now a vendor for many missing pieces, with Ghostcrawler suggesting that more will follow.
Will the trophies be missed?
Do you miss the exclusivity of certain types of gear? Do you wear your epics like trophies, telling stories of battles lost and won? Or do you tend to consider gear more as a means to an end, a tool allowing you to progress more easily, to improve your DPS or healing, or allow you to take more hits for your raid? And, of course, are the two mutually exclusive? I, for one, have no objection to gear being available to everyone, I still hold on to certain epics I was happy to have earned at the time, but if every player in the game had one it wouldn't make any difference -- mine is the one imbued with my memory of the wipes and the frustration and the eventual success. I still have the first purple I ever obtained in the game.

Why would a top guild not use loot council?
A blog post over at World of Matticus caught my eye earlier this week. It's
called Why a World Top 10 Guild Doesn't use Loot Council and tells a short story

I myself have never been in a world top 10 guild, but having been in several competitive US guilds I've seen my fair share of loot council and DKP. Regardless of the system my guild was using, we were always expected to make (and sometimes post) a list of our best-in-slot gear before the start of a tier. For DKP, this was to reduce the amount of surprises in bidding and help us all get an idea of who needed what before we snagged an upgrade. For the more common loot council, this let the council put together a master list to decide who should get what first. But which one was more efficient?
That depended on the guild. I've seen things go wrong in both systems. DKP bidding wars were common and would always suck up time. Worse were the arguments between players when the bid wars got ugly (oddly, it always seemed to be between a warlock and a mage). With loot council there were times when the council would slack off and not prepare their master list ahead of time, and end up taking 10 to 15 minutes to distribute big items like trinkets or weapons. But the worst was being on the loot council. The one time I was on it was in a not so cohesive guild, and I had to deal with a half dozen whispers during and after every raid from players who were unsatisfied with the council's decisions.
Since the start of Mists of Pandaria I've been raiding casually with a group of similarly retired hardcore players. Any guess what kind of loot system we use? We roll on gear, of all things. But we do this because we're all adults and there is a general understanding that everyone in the guild knows what they're doing and want what's best for the raid. Our members don't roll on every possible upgrade that turns up, and often times we'll pass without comment when we know another player is in great need of an upgrade. It's very civil, relaxed, and time efficient.
Honestly, I think all of these systems have the potential to be time efficient if used properly. The most important thing is that the players using them trust in them. Players in a raid using loot council have to believe their loot council is responsible, fair, and objective. Players using DKP or rolling have to trust in their fellow raiders. The size of the raid plays a big part too.
